Pastel Spring Flowers

It, and all of my pastel flowers, was done on the 9X12, 300-400 grit sandpaper you get at a hardware store. I use hard pastel watercolor pencils, that can have water applied, for a totally different effect. I then apply softer pastels to finish the work. All works are now sprayed with lacquer to appease my printer. I guess without spray, they leave quite a mess on photocopying equipment. Spraying does darken the work, so getting it lighter than desired is attempted.

Daffodils were the favorite flower of a dear friend of mine. I can remember Easter time as a child, when the church was filled with Daffodils and Pussywillows. Daffodils blooming is a sure sign of spring.


All pastel works need to be framed with glass, and kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading. Pastels will hold their true color behind glass for centuries.

Lilacs measures 11x14 framed.
Lilacs are a favorite of mine. They are easy to grow, hardy, and smell wonderful. This one also has had several versions sell.

Pink Tuliips measures 11x14 framed.
This was my first attempt with pastels. I had just purchased my hard pastel watercolor pencils, and two or three soft pastels in the pink shades. It is still one of my favorites.

Blue Anenomes measures 11x14 framed.
I often purchase bouquets from my neighborhood flower shop in early spring. They just seem to brighten the dark rainy days. Anenomes were one of the few flowers that the artwork looked similar to the bouquets when finished. I have still not mastered Snapdragons.

While working on this project, I had a friend stop by and quip, "those look like New ones compared to your bouquet." The drooping bouquet was tossed, but the picture is a favorite.
